Tender Details
Ongoing low flows in the Lower Darling River has resulted in the depletion of the Menindee Lakes storages, which provide the townships of Menindee and Broken Hill with water. In the absence of further inflow events, it is projected that water quality in the lakes will deteriorate to the point of not meeting Australian Drinking Water Guidelines (ADWG) using existing water treatment facilities by January 2016.
WaterNSW, along with the local urban water utility Essential Water; have been engaged by the NSW Government to investigate and implement short term water supply measures to safeguard water security.
As part of the wider project, WaterNSW is investigating sourcing raw water from shallow aquifers beneath Lake Menindee, Menindee Common and the Talyawalka floodplain and integrate these supplies into the existing Broken Hill water supply scheme. Essential Water is also in the process of res-establishing reverse osmosis facilities in Broken Hill to extend the use of surface water supplies for the city until February 2017. This still leaves the township of Menindee requiring an alternate water supply strategy in the short term.
This project shall only focus on the integration of the existing Menindee Common bore into the town supply. Works must be completed and commissioned by 15 December 2015 corresponding with when salinity levels in the dwindling surface water supplies exceed ADWG. The new facilities will also a backup raw water for future drought events.
