Detailed design and construction of stormwater quality improvement devices
Blacktown Council is responsible for the protection and enhancement of the natural environment through the preservation of water quality and promotion of water conservation and re-use. Water should be recognised as a valuable resource and the planning and management of a site be undertaken with regard to water being an asset. To facilitate cleaner waterways in the Blacktown LGA Council introduced the Environmental Stormwater Management Program in 2007 which is a comprehensive stormwater management program for the Blacktown LGA over the next five years. Part of this program includes the design, construction and maintenance of stormwater quality improvement devices in key locations around the Blacktown LGA to help prevent gross pollutants from entering receiving waterways. The objective is to develop a detailed design and construct the most suitable stormwater quality improvement devices to achieve the required target for the reduction in gross pollutant loads entering the receiving waters in the Blacktown LGA. Blacktown City Council (BCC) is seeking to engage a suitably qualified and experienced consultant to develop detailed design and construct stormwater quality improvement devices for the Blacktown LGA. Once constructed the stormwater quality improvement devices will help prevent gross pollutants from entering the local waterways of the Blacktown LGA. The contract will comprise of a maximum of three (3) months work commencing on Thursday 30 April 2009 and ending Friday 17 July 2009. The services required include the detailed design and construction of stormwater quality improvement devices. The sites include: · Goroka Street, Whalan Reserve, Whalan. · Northcott Road, Cavanagh Reserve, Lalor Park. · Between Jersey Road and Luxford Road at Popondetta Park, Lethbridge Park.

Vegetation Mapping Upgrade
An exiting opportunity is available for experienced professionals to be involved in updating and reviewing vegetation mapping across the Hills Shire Council. The purpose of the project is to bring the Councils vegetation mapping in line with the latest advances in remote sensing and vegetation classification. This project in turn forms part of an umbrella project which aims to map biodiversity values across the Shire. A range of vegetation mapping projects conducted over the last decade have incorporated some or all of the Hills Shire in their range. Councils current vegetation classification mapping was generated through consolidation of five previous mapping efforts (to 2002). The resultant classified vegetation patches were extrapolated to vegetation boundaries determined by near infra red photography flown in 2005. This resulted in a number of ‘grey areas’ where vegetation did not overlap previously classified areas, and where classification was therefore difficult. The objectives of this project are to update the present mapping in the following aspects: · Reviewing previous and current vegetation mapping projects · Resolving vegetation boundaries with recently flown data including ALS (Aerial laser scan) and full spectrum photography. · Revising vegetation categories in line with recent vegetation studies · Assigning ecological community categories to vegetation through interpolation of existing mapping and through rapid ground-truthing · Assigning vegetation condition categories to vegetation through interpolation of existing mapping and through rapid ground-truthing

Flora and Fauna Survey & Support
The Hills Shire Council is inviting expressions of interest from environmental professionals to provide Threatened flora & fauna survey and survey support for Council’s ‘ Biodiversity Conservation Mapping ’ (BCM) program. The purpose of the BCM program is to provide the information necessary to inform conservation planning across Council teams. In the short term, the project will collate and analyse data on the nature and extent of biodiversity within the Shire. These data will be analysed and extrapolated to provide likelihood mapping of high conservation value lands. As over 90% of the bushland in the Shire is in private ownership, biodiversity mapping will concentrate on private lands, complemented by existing survey on Council and National Park tenures. The project is being coordinated by Council’s Flora & Fauna Projects Officer (Sustainability Team), with collaboration from the Parks & Reserves team and a range of community groups. Successful applicants will be required to undertake a wide range of survey and support tasks, which may include night and early morning work. Tasks are likely to include: · Independent targeted flora survey on private lands · Liaison with landowners (arranging access, engaging and educating) · Installation and maintenance of survey equipment · Diurnal bird, reptile and amphibian survey · Assisted nocturnal survey & survey support It is envisaged that targeted flora survey will comprise the vast bulk of work undertaken. The program is to take place across The Hills Shire Council area and will run until at least 29 April 2009. Possibilities for extending the program are presently under investigation.
