The World Masters Games is the largest multi-sport event in the world based on participation. Sydney has won the rights to host the seventh World Masters Games in October 2009 where a record 25,000 competitors are expected to compete.

The World Masters Games has a similar format to the Olympic Games, with athletes from over 100 countries set to compete in a nine day festival of sport. 

The Sydney 2009 World Masters Games will be staged from 10-18 October 2009, with an estimated 25,000+ participants from around the world. The Games Backpacks refers to the Backpacks offered by the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games Organising Committee (SWMGOC) to the following personnel groups, participant groups and stakeholders associated with the Games:

·             Competitors

·             Team support personnel

·             International Masters Games Association (IMGA)

·             Games Subcommittee Members

·             SWMGOC Staff

·             Games Advisory Committee Members

·             Sport Organisation Committee Members

·             VIPs and Games Partners

·             Observers (with the Observer Program)

·             Technical Officials and Technical Delegates (TBC)

·             Volunteers (TBC)

It is anticipated that the number of Games Backpacks will be between approximately 35,000 and 45,000.
