Expression of Interest from Contractors prequalified in the Building Works category of the Department of Commerce Contractor Prequalification and Best Practice Accreditation Scheme 2008-2010 are being invited to apply for selection for Taronga Zoo - Upper Entrance Precinct: Creation of the Inner Plaza & Outer Plaza - Package 2A. (Taronga Zoo - TCSA Contract No. C2009.003)

Background:

Taronga Zoo is located on Sydney Harbour’s northern foreshore, at the head of Athol Bay. It is in the Municipality of Mosman. The Upper Entry Precinct, located in the north-eastern part of the Zoo, sits on the flattest and highest area of Taronga Zoo.

The northern boundary of the Upper Entry Precinct is delineated by Whiting Beach Road.  The existing car park building was constructed as Contract Package 1 of this precinct.   Sydney Harbour National Park is to the east of the Upper Entry Precinct, beyond Bradley’s Head Road.  A temporary retail and ticketing facility on the northwest part of the precinct has been established for zoo visitors circulation. To the south, it is Taronga Zoo’s main animal exhibits.

The Works in this Contract provides for the creation of The Inner Plaza and the Outer Plaza.  The Inner Plaza comprises:

• A higher zone of paved area for primary circulation, information gathering and amenities (guest services counter, Zoo Friends’ counter, ticketing hall access, toilets and retails, etc), and directing patrons to the Zoo entry and exit proper (the Node).  A new walkway and stair will take all Zoo visitors past a giant fig near the Node where the ticketing collection points are to be located;

 

• A lower zone for passive circulation and recreation – an area enclosed by a gently winding sandstone wall that creates a plateau garden edge, and frames the easternmost of two giant figs which are to be retained as the primary provider of shade in the area.

The Outer Plaza comprises the forecourt area, the Heritage Tram Shed and the various services in the vicinity.
