About The ICAC

The ICAC was established to investigate, expose and minimise corruption in the NSW public sector. The ICAC directs its attention to serious and systemic corrupt conduct and takes into account the responsibility and role of other public officials and authorities in the prevention of corrupt conduct. More detailed information on the ICAC can be found at www.icac.nsw.gov.au.

Communication Needs of ICAC’s Clients

The Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) clients have a range of different communication needs. From time to time the ICAC, in the delivery of services to our clients, requires the assistance of an independent body to provide translation services and interpreter services to clients, either on-site or via telephone, at no cost to them.

A translator will deal with the written text and translate from one language to another. Whilst an interpreter will deal with the spoken word and interpret what a client says into another language.

During the 2008-09 financial year the ICAC required the services of either an interpreter and/or translator on forty-seven occasions (either on an occasional basis or as a collective basis).

Translators and Interpreters

The ICAC seeks NAATI (National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters Ltd.) Level 3 accredited, recognised and experienced interpreters and translators in areas where languages are in demand. Please note that this Level 3 of accreditation is the minimum level required for both translators and interpreters.

Whilst not exhaustive, historically the main languages that the ICAC have been required to use interpreters and/or translators are: Arabic, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Cantonese, Hindi, Serbian, Turkish, Italian, Croatian, Greek, Spanish and Thai.

The ICAC also welcomes interest in the provision of both AUSLAN and Aboriginal Interpreter Services.

Additional Details / Instructions

Translator/Interpreter Register

It is the intention of the ICAC to establish a central Register which will be retained for a three year period. ICAC will select agencies and contractors for the Register having regard to:

  • NAATI Interpreting/translation accreditation level;
  • range of services to be provided;
  • availability to provide services including at short notice;
  • after hours and weekends;
  • proficiency in Microsoft Word;
  • willingness to undergo security vetting;and
  • final security clearance.

Note: It should be noted that whilst you may be selected for inclusion on the Register the ICAC may not need to utilise your services during the three year retention period.

Security Vetting

The Independent Commission Against Corruption Act 1988 requires all officers who work at the Commission to undergo vetting; this includes persons who are permanent, temporary, seconded, contracted or consultants, as well as companies.

What is Vetting?

Vetting is a process by which the Independent Commission Against Corruption undertakes background checks to assess a person’s suitability. The aim of vetting is three-fold:

  • to confirm your identification;
  • to look at whether any association you have gives rise to a conflict of interest;and
  • whether there are any vulnerable aspects of your life that improper pressure could be applied to.

More information on the vetting process can be found at www.icac.nsw.gov.au under “job vacancies – security vetting”.

Alternatively, you can also contact the Commission’s Security and Risk Management Officer on (02) 8281 5785.
