Tender Details
This project aims at defining how best to secure substantial water savings in the NSW Darling River system, particularly the Menindee Lakes. The project complements NSW and national activities aimed at improved water management in the Murray-Darling Basin to increase environmental flow availability.
Menindee Lakes is the main water storage on the Lower Darling (110km from Broken Hill). The lakes are an important ecosystem as well a critical water storage source for parts of NSW, Victoria and South Australia. In the Darling Basin above Menindee, there are major dams on all major NSW tributaries, and the Border Rivers. A relatively high proportion of the flows into the Menindee Lakes are the direct result of runoff from rainfall rather than releases from dams. Consequently, flows in the Darling River may be significantly affected by practices including floodplain harvesting and rainfall harvesting by upstream irrigators. Part A of the Darling River Water Savings Project concluded in March 2007.
The Part A report recommended further evaluation of six integrated schemes that included a range of structural, operational, regulatory and market measures.
The Part B Project Consultant will be required to:-
i. carry out further analysis and development of schemes.
ii. develop a 20 year Strategic Plan for the NSW Darling River system.
iii. prepare a Preliminary Environmental Assessment for works at Menindee Lakes and for Broken Hill water supply.
