Central Coast Council / Replacement of a 600 metre length of 250 mm water main - McDonagh Road, Wyong 2259 - CPA/157278

The subject water main comprises of about 600m length of 200mm Class C A/C main constructed about 1966. The water main was originally laid in swamp land, over time further development in the area has increased the surface levels and deepened (approx 2 meters) the water main making maintenance and repairs difficult. The main has had 15 failures between Lewis Ave and the Fish Co-Op of McDonagh Road in Tacoma over the previous 3 years, with 3 failures during October 2005.  This is the second half of the project. The first half of the project has already been completed in June 2006

Three methods of replacement were considered.  Due to the depth of the existing main, pipe cracking was ruled out, as the preferred depth for the replacement main is a maximum of 1 metre.  Dig and Lay was ruled out due to the risks associated with acid sulphate soils and erosion and sedimentation control issues adjacent a sensitive wetland.  Directional drilling was determined as the most appropriate option under the circumstances.
