A key business practice for the twelve (12) South Eastern Sydney Illawarra Health Service (SESIAHS) Medical Record/Clinical Information Departments is the requirement to manage and effectively maintain patient health information for significant periods of time as prescribed by the NSW State Records Act and other relevant legislation. The format in which this information is kept in the vast majority of cases is on paper in a patients medical record. The ever increasing volume of medical records and the time periods for which they need to be kept combined with a reduction in the size of physical space to store them within SESIAHS organisations means that systematic management programs, however separate, exist in each facility to both cull medical records and where possible store them offsite.
