Tender Details

Class-leader 3801 is one of four survivors or the class of 30 introduced as express passenger engines in 1943. The first five of the class, including 3801, were built by the Clyde Engineering Co. Ltd., and were semi-streamlined, with a tapered nose-cone and cowling on top of the boiler which hides the steam dome and chimney and other boiler mountings; 3801 is the only one of the streamlined type to survive. After the formation of the NSWRTM in 1962, steam locomotive 3801 was placed in the custody of the NSWRTM for preservation. Locomotive 3801 is part of the RailCorp Heritage Rolling Stock collection assembled and maintained by NSWRTM. 3801 was withdrawn from service due to boiler defects in 1976. It was then overhauled and fitted with a replacement inner firebox and a new front tubeplate, c.1983 to 1986, by the Hunter Valley Training Company in partnership with the Newcastle State Dockyard under an agreement with the Museum and RailCorp. In association with this overhaul, it was repainted in lined green livery. The locomotive was subsequently leased to 3801 Limited between 1986 and 26 November 2006 for use on steam tours and charter operations. At the conclusion of this lease, locomotive 3801 returned to the Rail Transport Museum and is currently on display, pending overhaul.
