An exiting opportunity is available for experienced professionals to be involved in updating and reviewing vegetation mapping across the Hills Shire Council. The purpose of the project is to bring the Councils vegetation mapping in line with the latest advances in remote sensing and vegetation classification. This project in turn forms part of an umbrella project which aims to map biodiversity values across the Shire.
A range of vegetation mapping projects conducted over the last decade have incorporated some or all of the Hills Shire in their range. Councils current vegetation classification mapping was generated through consolidation of five previous mapping efforts (to 2002). The resultant classified vegetation patches were extrapolated to vegetation boundaries determined by near infra red photography flown in 2005. This resulted in a number of ‘grey areas’ where vegetation did not overlap previously classified areas, and where classification was therefore difficult.
The objectives of this project are to update the present mapping in the following aspects:
· Reviewing previous and current vegetation mapping projects
· Resolving vegetation boundaries with recently flown data including ALS (Aerial laser scan) and full spectrum photography.
· Revising vegetation categories in line with recent vegetation studies
· Assigning ecological community categories to vegetation through interpolation of existing mapping and through rapid ground-truthing
· Assigning vegetation condition categories to vegetation through interpolation of existing mapping and through rapid ground-truthing
